FIG. 01 — COUNTERTOP CM, KITCHEN COUNTER
Obsidian black countertop bean-to-cup coffee machine with a stainless steel top panel and a side water tank, standing on a light counter against a dark backsplash
COLLECTED
A countertop machine travels. It is unplugged, carried out and worked on at a bench — which is the entire difference between this and the built-in version of it.
SECTION 01 · WHY US

Four differentiators

01

We say which machine you have before we quote

A CM and a CVA get different answers here. Plenty of shops quote one price for "a Miele" and renegotiate when they find the cabinet. That is not a quote, it is an opening bid.

02

The brew unit is treated as Miele specifies

Warm water only, lubricant replaced where it has been washed away, cleaning and degreasing programmes run from the menu rather than improvised. It is a short list and most of the platform depends on it.

03

Built-in work coordinated, not improvised

A CVA stays in its column unless the fault is behind the chassis. When it does have to come out and the cabinetry fights back, we would rather bring in the person who built the kitchen than take a chisel to someone’s veneer. We say so before starting.

04

Countertop machines travel

A CM does not need anyone in your kitchen. It is collected, done on the bench where the light and the tools are, and brought back.

Miele builds a genuinely good bean-to-cup machine and puts it in two very different situations. A CM sits on a counter and comes to us like any other premium super-automatic. A CVA is built into cabinetry, wired in behind a trim kit, and is serviced where it stands, in your kitchen — which makes it a different job with a different answer, and we would rather say that up front than quote you a countertop price and discover the cabinet afterwards.

SECTION 02 · MODELS WE SERVICE

Miele line-up

M-01

CM 7 series

Top countertop machine. Multiple user profiles, integrated milk system, the fullest drinks menu Miele offers on a counter.

M-02

CM 6 series

The mid countertop machine and the most common Miele we see in LA homes. Removable brew unit like the rest of the range.

M-03

CM 5 series

Entry countertop. Simpler interface, same brew-unit architecture, same maintenance programmes.

M-04

CVA 6 / CVA 7 built-in systems

Built into a run of cabinetry with a trim kit, usually hardwired and often plumbed. Mechanically close to the CM machines. Most of it is reached through the front; the rest depends on how the unit was installed.

M-05

CVA 615 / CVA 6800 and earlier built-ins

Older built-in generations still fitted in plenty of LA kitchens. Manuals and parts remain available; the cabinet work is the variable, not the machine.

SECTION 03 · COMMON PROBLEMS

What goes wrong on a Miele

  • P-01

Beans ground, water present, no drink dispensed

The signature Miele fault and the one their own troubleshooting leads with. The brew unit has clogged — grounds compacted in the filters rather than a mechanical failure. Strip, clean the filters, refit.

    $150-$260
  • P-02

    Brew unit cleaned with detergent

Miele is explicit that the brew unit goes under warm running water and nothing else, because its moving parts are lubricated and washing-up liquid strips that lubricant. Owners who scrub it clean are the ones who come back with a stiff or noisy unit six months later.

    $150-$240
  • P-03

Brew unit will not release from the machine

There is a button at the base of the handle that has to be held while the handle turns left. It is not obvious and it is not forceful — if it needs force, something else is wrong and forcing it turns a clean into a part.

    $150-$230
  • P-04

    Descaling programme will not complete

Usually the water container is below the level the cycle needs and the machine stops rather than running dry. Refill and restart. A cycle that still stalls with a full container is scale in the path, not a user error.

    $220-$340
  • P-05

Milk system residue and weak foam

The milk path has its own cleaning programme and it is the one owners skip because the machine still makes coffee without it. Foam quality drops before anything else does. Full strip and sanitise of the milk lines and valves.

    $180-$300
  • P-06

A CVA fault that sits behind the chassis

Most CVA faults are reached with the front open, the way Miele intended. The pump, the valves and the water connection are not: for those the trim kit comes off, the supply is disconnected and the unit comes forward out of its housing, with the cabinetry masked first. What that takes depends on how the kitchen was built, which is why we look before we price it.

SECTION 04 · MIELE · BUILT-IN

Miele CVA built-in

CVA 4066 · CVA 5060 · CVA 5065 · CVA 6401 · CVA 6805 · CVA 7440 · CVA 7845

The CVA line runs from the CVA 4066 and the CVA 5060 and CVA 5065, through the CVA 6401 and the plumbed-capable CVA 6805, to the CVA 7440 and CVA 7845 of Generation 7000. We see all of them, because a Miele kitchen is kept for twenty years and the coffee system is kept with it.

One fact separates a CVA from every other built-in we work on: it is Miele’s own design. There is no platform sharing and there are no substitute parts. A Gaggenau part can often be ordered under a Bosch number, and a Wolf part under a De’Longhi one. A Miele part is a Miele part, ordered from Miele against the model and serial, and the lead time is whatever Miele says it is. We tell you that date before you approve anything.

The CVA is serviced where it stands. Most of the machine is reached with the front open, the way Miele intended, and the unit comes out of its column only when the fault is behind the chassis. That decision is made with the owner, with the cabinetry masked first. Unlike a countertop CM, a CVA never travels to our bench unless there is no other way to do the repair.

On a plumbed CVA the first thing we find is the shutoff, before the front is opened. On any CVA that has been in the wall for a decade, the second thing we check is the niche itself: ventilation gaps, the outlet behind the unit, and whether heat has been doing slow damage to the electronics.

The cabinet, the water line and how the visit runs: built-in coffee machine repair.

FIG. 02 — BUILT-IN CVA, IN CABINETRY
Built-in coffee machine set flush into dark wood kitchen cabinetry behind a slim stainless trim frame, twin dispensing spouts behind a glass front
Nothing here lifts off a counter, so the work is done in the kitchen. Most of the machine is reached through the front; how much more than that a fault needs is why a built-in is quoted after we have seen the installation.
FIG. 03 — TWIN SPOUT AND CONTROL ROW
Close view of the twin coffee spouts and the row of touch controls on a black countertop coffee machine, white cup on the drip tray below
Grounds compact in the brew-unit filters and the machine goes through the whole cycle with nothing reaching the cup. Miele lists it first in their own troubleshooting, and it is a clean rather than a part.

SECTION 06 · FAQ

Frequently asked.

Q-01 How much does Miele coffee machine service cost?
A countertop CM is the flat figure above, courier both ways included. A single fault is quoted per repair instead. Typical Miele work: brew-unit strip and clean $150-$260, milk-system sanitise $180-$300, full descale $220-$340. Typical figures rather than quotes. What the repair costs depends on what we find. You get a written estimate before anything is done, and you can decline it — we bring the machine back and nothing further is owed.
Q-02 Is a built-in CVA priced the same as a countertop CM?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not seen your kitchen. The machine work is comparable. The installation is not: a CVA is serviced in its column, and whether the fault can be reached through the front or needs the unit brought forward depends on the trim kit, the electrical connection and how much room the installer left behind it. We look at the installation, then quote. The flat countertop price does not apply to a built-in.
Q-03 My Miele grinds the beans but no coffee comes out. What is wrong?
The brew unit is clogged. Grounds compact in the filters and the machine goes through the motions without producing anything. Miele lists this first in their own troubleshooting for a reason. Pull the unit, rinse the filters properly, refit. If it recurs within weeks, the grind is too fine for the beans you are using.
Q-04 Can I wash the brew unit with dish soap?
No. Warm running water only. Its moving parts are lubricated from the factory and detergent takes that lubricant with it, which is why a machine that has been scrubbed clean often runs stiffer than one that was rinsed. If yours has been washed with soap, it needs re-lubricating rather than replacing.
Q-05 Are you a Miele authorised service partner?
No. Miele runs its own service organisation in the States and it is a good one, particularly while the machine is under warranty. We are the independent option afterwards, and for owners who want the countertop machine collected rather than waiting in for an appointment window.
Q-06 Is an eight-year-old CM 6 worth repairing?
Usually yes, and more often than with cheaper bean-to-cup machines. These are built heavily and the brew unit is a serviceable part rather than a sealed one. The decision changes if the boiler and the board both need work at once — then the numbers get close enough that we will lay them out and let you choose.
SECTION 07 · CASE STUDY · HONEST OPINION
Representative job · composite of recent work

Representative job: CM 6 in a Pasadena home, grinding beans and dispensing nothing. Brew unit filters packed solid with compacted grounds, and the unit itself running dry after what turned out to be a year of conscientious washing-up-liquid cleaning. Filters cleared, unit re-lubricated to spec, milk path sanitised, descale run. Total: bench time about two hours, $319 flat including collection and return. The owner had been quoted a replacement brew unit by someone who had not opened it.

Honest opinion

If you are specifying a kitchen right now and choosing between a built-in CVA and a countertop CM, understand what the built-in costs you over ten years in service access, not just at purchase. A CM is lifted off the counter and sent to a bench. A CVA is worked on in the wall, and the faults behind its chassis mean opening up cabinetry somebody paid a great deal for. The coffee is the same. If the cabinetry look is worth that to you, it is a legitimate choice — but make it knowingly rather than because the showroom put the built-in on the display run.
