Espresso machine repair in San Jose.

Santa Clara County · the bench

Espresso machine and coffee brewer repair across San Jose and the rest of Santa Clara County: downtown and SoFA, Japantown, Willow Glen, Santana Row, Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Santa Clara and Milpitas. Countertop machines are collected by courier and repaired on our San Jose bench; plumbed and commercial machines are serviced where they stand.

San Jose is where the bench is, which makes Santa Clara County the one part of Northern California where the courier is a short drive rather than a scheduled run. It is also the county with the most uneven water we have measured anywhere. San Jose Water runs three supplies. Groundwater from the Santa Clara Valley basin, served to East San Jose, downtown, Cambrian and Willow Glen, averaged 364 ppm hardness in 2025, about 21 grains per gallon, with individual wells up to 32. Treated imported water in Cupertino, Saratoga, Campbell, west and south San Jose and Berryessa averaged 7 grains. Mountain water from the Santa Cruz Mountains, 9 grains. Same city, three times the scale rate depending on the street, and the first thing we ask on the phone is the cross street.

SECTION 01 · HOW A SAN JOSE REPAIR RUNS

How a San Jose repair runs

Call or use the quote sheet with the model and the symptom. For a countertop machine a courier collects it at the door, photographs it, and you sign a pickup receipt on his phone. The bench diagnostic is $145, and that figure includes the courier both ways. It is credited in full toward the repair when you approve the estimate. You get a photo report and a written estimate by text, usually within two business days of collection, and the machine does not leave the bench until you say yes. Most repairs are back in 3-5 business days; a part that has to ship from a US distributor adds the shipping time, and we say so before we order.

For a plumbed machine the technician comes to it. The on-site diagnostic is the same $145 on the same terms. We do not quote a repair over the phone from a description, because a Linea PB that “makes no steam” has four different causes at four different prices, and the one we guess will be the wrong one.

SECTION 02 · DOWNTOWN, JAPANTOWN, WILLOW GLEN AND THE BARS

Downtown, Japantown, Willow Glen and the bars

The specialty bars in San Jose cluster around downtown and SoFA, Japantown’s Jackson Street, Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen, downtown Campbell and North Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos, with Santana Row and Valley Fair on the retail side. The machines on those bars are what you would expect: La Marzocco Linea PB and Linea Classic S in two and three groups, a few Slayer Steam and Synesso S200, Nuova Simonelli Aurelia Wave and Appia Life at the restaurant end, Victoria Arduino Black Eagle where someone had the budget, and a Mahlkönig E65S or EK43 next to every one of them.

None of that goes on the courier. A two-group machine is a 70-kilogram plumbed fixture, and a cafe that loses it loses the morning. Group seals, steam valves, pressurestat and PID faults, boiler safety valves, pump pressure, flowmeters, and the descaling that groundwater demands are all done in place. Commercial on-site service starts at $749 for a one-group machine and $1,049 for two groups; a single fault is estimated after the $145 visit.

SECTION 03 · OFFICE COFFEE BETWEEN CUPERTINO AND MILPITAS

Office coffee between Cupertino and Milpitas

The other half of Santa Clara County’s coffee is in break rooms. Campuses and office parks from Cupertino and Sunnyvale across Santa Clara to north San Jose and Milpitas run super-automatics at volumes a cafe would envy: Jura GIGA X8 and X10, Franke A600 and A800, Eversys Cameo, Schaerer Coffee Soul, WMF 1500 S+, and a Bunn or Curtis batch brewer beside the kombucha tap. A machine making 250 drinks a day does not care that the facilities ticket says “low priority”. It cares about its brew unit, its flowmeter and its grinder burrs, in that order.

We take these on a maintenance contract with a fixed visit every eight to twelve weeks and a priority call-out between visits. Contracts run $400 to $2,800 a year depending on the machine count and the visit interval, and a site with three or more machines gets 15-25% off the single-machine rate. The visit that matters most is the first one, when we measure the water and set the descale interval from the number rather than from the display.

SECTION 04 · HOME MACHINES BY COURIER

Home machines by courier

Most of what the courier carries is a home machine from Willow Glen, the Rose Garden, Almaden, Los Gatos, Saratoga or Cupertino: Breville Barista Express, Barista Pro and Oracle Touch, Jura E8, Z10 and S8, DeLonghi Dinamica, Eletta and Magnifica Evo, Rocket Appartamento and Giotto, Lelit Bianca, Profitec Pro 500 and Pro 700, ECM Synchronika, and the occasional La Marzocco Linea Mini, which the courier is glad to collect and glad to put down. Flat-rate service on the bench runs $159 for an entry machine, $219 to $319 for a super-automatic, $329 for a compact Jura, $249 for a Breville prosumer and $429 for an E61 machine; a repair beyond the service is estimated after the diagnostic.

Two things we say on the phone before the courier moves. A drip machine that costs under $150 new is not worth the diagnostic and we tell you so. And a ten-year-old super-automatic with a scaled boiler and a stiff brew unit is usually a replacement conversation; we would rather say that before you pay $145 than after.

SECTION 05 · THREE WATERS, ONE CITY

Three waters, one city

The default advice in this county, from installers and from the descale light on the machine, is one schedule for everyone. It is wrong in both directions. On the groundwater zones, East San Jose, downtown, Cambrian and Willow Glen, 21 grains per gallon puts roughly a kilogram of scale a year into a two-group machine making 200 drinks a day; a home machine there needs a descale every six months and softened water in the tank, and a plumbed machine needs a softener or blending stage ahead of the carbon cartridge, not a cartridge alone. On the imported-water zones, Cupertino, Saratoga, Campbell, west San Jose, 7 grains is ordinary water: a yearly descale is plenty and the $1,800 dual-tank system a salesperson may push at a new cafe in Campbell is money that should have gone into a second grinder.

So we do not sell a San Jose filtration package. We test the tap, and we specify from the number. On a plumbed machine that is a single Everpure cartridge on imported water and a softener plus cartridge on groundwater; on a home machine it is a softening pouch in the tank or none at all. The test takes five minutes and is part of every first visit.

SECTION 06 · THE REST OF THE COUNTY, AND THE COUNTY LINE

The rest of the county, and the county line

Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Milpitas are on the courier and the on-site calendar like the rest of the city. Morgan Hill and Gilroy are on the courier with a day’s notice, and on-site for commercial accounts. Los Altos and Los Altos Hills ride with the Peninsula pages because their water comes from the same Hetch Hetchy system as Palo Alto; the Peninsula page has the detail. North of the Dumbarton Bridge the East Bay page takes over, and over Highway 17 the Santa Cruz page does. The bench is the same for all of them.

SECTION 07 · LOCAL WATER PROFILE

Local water
profile.

TDS 280-640 ppm (avg 458) groundwater zones; 166-326 ppm (avg 273) imported water; 235 ppm mountain supply
Calcium hardness 21 GPG groundwater (9-32); 7 GPG imported (5-10); 9 GPG mountain surface water
Alkalinity Not reported by zone in the 2025 report; we measure at the tap at commissioning

Which of the three San Jose Water supplies reaches a tap is a matter of pressure zone, not neighbourhood pride, and the 2025 report draws the line roughly like this: groundwater to East San Jose, downtown, Cambrian and Willow Glen; imported Santa Clara Valley Water District water to Cupertino, Saratoga, Campbell, west and south San Jose and Berryessa; mountain water to the Los Gatos foothills. Groundwater at 21 grains per gallon is as hard as the worst of Southern California and a home machine on it needs a descale every six months. Imported water at 7 grains is ordinary; a yearly descale is enough. Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Milpitas draw partly on Hetch Hetchy water through the SFPUC regional system, which is softer still. We test the tap on the first visit and write the number on the estimate.

SECTION 11 · FAQ

Frequently asked.

Q-01 How fast can you collect a machine in San Jose?
Usually the same or the next business day, and we confirm the window when we call back. The bench is in San Jose, so there is no run to wait for inside Santa Clara County. Morgan Hill and Gilroy need a day’s notice.
Q-02 How long is my machine gone?
Most repairs are back in 3-5 business days. You get the written estimate within two business days of collection, and the machine does not leave the bench until you approve it. A part that ships from a US distributor adds the shipping time, which goes into the estimate before we order.
Q-03 What do the $145 and the $250 cover?
$145 is the courier both ways and the full bench diagnostic for a countertop machine; $250 is the technician’s on-site diagnostic for a plumbed or commercial machine. Either diagnostic is credited in full toward the repair when you approve the estimate. If you decide not to repair, the machine comes back and there is no further charge.
Q-04 Does the cafe machine go to the bench?
No. A plumbed commercial machine is serviced where it stands, and the first visit is the $250 on-site diagnostic. Only countertop machines ride the courier: home machines, most prosumer machines, office brewers and grinders.
Q-05 My Jura asks for a descale every few weeks. Is that normal in San Jose?
If you are in Willow Glen, Cambrian, downtown or East San Jose, yes: that is 21-grain groundwater, and the machine is counting litres correctly. Use the softening pouch in the tank and descale when it asks. In Cupertino, Campbell or Saratoga the water is 7 grains, and if the machine still asks that often, the hardness setting in its menu is wrong and we reset it on the bench.
Q-06 Do you cover Morgan Hill, Gilroy and the south county?
Yes, by courier with a day’s notice and on site for commercial accounts. Hollister and San Benito County are by arrangement; we quote the trip rather than pretend it is around the corner.
SECTION 12 · CASE STUDY · HONEST OPINION
Typical call

Typical call from Willow Glen: a four-year-old Jura E8 that shows “fill system” after every second cup and takes two attempts to prime. On the bench the flowmeter paddle is coated with scale, the brew unit is stiff enough to stall the drive on the return stroke, and the pump pressure is down to 11 bar; the owner has been running the built-in descale program with tap water from a 21-grain supply. Descale by circulation, brew unit stripped and rebuilt with new O-rings, flowmeter cleaned, hardness setting corrected in the menu, twenty cups through it on the bench. Two and a half hours; $329 Jura compact service with the diagnostic already paid coming off that figure; back by courier on the third business day with a softening pouch for the tank.

Honest opinion

In San Jose the machine’s descale schedule is right on one side of town and wrong on the other, and the installers’ filtration quote is usually wrong on both. A groundwater cafe needs a softener stage that most quotes leave out; an imported-water cafe does not need the two-tank system it is being sold. The water test takes five minutes. We would rather do it than guess, and we would rather you spend the difference on a grinder.

SECTION 13 · BUILT-IN COFFEE MACHINES

Built-in coffee machines in Los Gatos, Saratoga and Almaden

The kitchens in the Los Gatos and Saratoga hills and along the Almaden valley were built with the coffee machine in the cabinet: Miele CVA, Gaggenau, Thermador, Wolf, Bosch. These are serviced in place, with the cabinet and the stone counter protected before a panel comes off. How the visit runs, and what we protect: built-in coffee machine repair.
