Espresso machine repair in San Francisco.
City and County · courier run
Espresso machine and coffee brewer repair across San Francisco: the Mission, SoMa, Hayes Valley, the Financial District, North Beach, the Marina, Pacific Heights, Noe Valley, the Castro, the Sunset and the Richmond. Countertop machines are collected on the city run and brought to our San Jose bench; cafe, hotel and office machines are serviced in place.
San Francisco has the densest specialty-coffee bar mile in the state and the softest water of any big city in it. Hetch Hetchy water makes up as much as 85% of the city’s supply, and the 2025 SFPUC report puts hardness at 8 to 112 ppm with an average of 62, under four grains per gallon. That changes what breaks. We see far less scale here than anywhere else we work and far more of everything else: group gaskets that have been cooked for six years, pumps that have run dry, flowmeters fouled by coffee oils rather than calcium, and water so low in minerals that shots taste flat and a machine’s level probe cannot see it. The repair list for a San Francisco machine is a different list, and so is the filtration advice.

How the city run works
San Francisco is 48 miles from the bench, so countertop machines are collected on a run rather than one at a time. Book, and we name the day when we call back; the courier texts twenty minutes before arrival, photographs the machine at the door and takes a signature on his phone. The diagnostic is $145 and includes the courier both ways. It is credited in full toward the repair when you approve the estimate. The written estimate and photo report come by text while the machine is on the bench, and the repaired machine rides the next run back, or the one after when a part has to ship.
Flats and parking are the practical problem, not the distance. Give us the buzzer, the floor, and whether there is a loading zone; a courier who can double-park for four minutes on Valencia Street at 10am is a courier who finds your machine, and one who cannot is a courier who calls you from the car.
The Mission, SoMa, Hayes Valley and the bar machines
The bars run deep here. Valencia and the Mission, the SoMa roasteries, Hayes Valley, the Financial District at commute hour, Divisadero, Clement Street, the Outer Sunset’s surf-coffee strip, and the hotel lobbies around Union Square. Machines to match: La Marzocco Linea PB, Strada and GB5 in three groups; Slayer Steam and Slayer Espresso; Synesso S200 and MVP Hydra; Modbar under-counter groups in the newer builds; Kees van der Westen Spirit in a couple of the serious rooms; and on the grinder side Mahlkönig EK43 and E80, Mazzer Robur and Mythos.
These are serviced in place. The faults that come up on soft water are not the scale faults: group gaskets and shower screens cooked hard, pressurestats and PID sensors drifting, pump pressure down, steam valves weeping, needle valves on the Slayer flow system gummed with coffee oil, solenoids sticking. Commercial on-site service starts at $749 for one group and $1,049 for two; a single fault is estimated after the $145 visit. For a bar that is down we move a technician up the 101 outside the run.
Hotels, offices and the super-automatics
The Union Square and Nob Hill hotels, the Embarcadero and SoMa offices, and the co-working floors run on super-automatics and batch brewers: Thermoplan super-automatics in the hotel breakfast rooms, Schaerer and Franke A800 in the lobbies, Eversys Cameo and Enigma at the better restaurants, Jura GIGA X10 and WE8 in the offices, Bunn and Curtis for banquet volume. The failure pattern on soft water is the brew unit and the grinder before the boiler: a machine doing 300 drinks a day wears its seals and its burrs on schedule whatever the water does.
We take these on a maintenance contract, $400 to $2,800 a year by machine count and interval, with a visit every eight to twelve weeks and a priority call-out in between. On the first visit we measure the water, which in this city usually means telling the facilities manager that the softener in the plant room can be switched off.
Home machines: Rocket, Breville, Linea Mini, Profitec
What rides the city run is the home machine from a flat in Noe Valley, Bernal, the Inner Sunset, the Richmond or Russian Hill: Breville Barista Express, Barista Touch and Oracle; Rocket Appartamento and Mozzafiato; Profitec Pro 500 and Go; ECM Classika and Synchronika; Lelit Bianca and Mara X; La Marzocco Linea Mini and Micra; Jura E8 and Z10; DeLonghi Dinamica and La Specialista. Flat-rate service on the bench is $159 for an entry machine, $219 to $319 for a super-automatic, $329 for a compact Jura, $249 for a Breville prosumer and $429 for an E61 machine. A repair beyond the service is estimated after the diagnostic.
On San Francisco water the usual home-machine complaint is not scale. It is a Breville that will not come to pressure because the group gasket is five years old, a Rocket whose vibration pump has run dry after the tank went empty, or a Jura whose level sensor cannot read water this low in minerals and reports an empty tank that is full. The last one is a thirty-second fix on the phone: a pinch of mineral drops or a different bottled water in the tank.
Why we will not sell you a softener in San Francisco
The filtration default from installers is the same cartridge-plus-softener package everywhere, and here it is wrong. At 62 ppm average hardness the water is already below the SCA’s recommended range; a softener takes it to zero and the shot tastes like warm paper. What a plumbed machine in this city needs is a carbon block for chlorine and taste, and possibly a remineralising stage if the bar is chasing a specific cup. What it does not need is the $1,800 two-tank system, and if a quote includes one for a Mission cafe we will say so in writing.
The exception is the late-summer blend in the south and west of the city, when reservoir water pushes hardness toward the top of the range. That is still soft by any Southern California standard. A yearly descale covers it.
Daly City, South San Francisco and the county line
The city run collects from Daly City, Colma, Brisbane and South San Francisco on the way in and out, since they sit on the same road. From San Bruno south the Peninsula page takes over, with its own water story, which is mostly the same Hetch Hetchy water and the same advice. Across the bridge, the East Bay page covers Oakland and Berkeley, where EBMUD water is softer still.
Local water
profile.
San Francisco water is a blend that moves with the season: Hetch Hetchy snowmelt from the Sierra, which is close to distilled, and water from the Crystal Springs and San Andreas reservoirs on the Peninsula, which is harder. The 2025 report’s range of 8 to 112 ppm hardness is that blend; a tap in the city sits most of the year near the 62 ppm average, well under the 68 ppm the SCA calls the lower edge of the brewing window. In practice that means scale is a slow problem here and mineral starvation is a fast one. A plumbed machine on this water does not need a softener. Some bars add a remineralising cartridge so the shot has something to extract against, and that is a taste decision we will set up but will not oversell. Where the blend is heaviest on reservoir water, in the south and west of the city in late summer, a yearly descale is still the right call.

Typical call from a two-group bar in the Mission: a six-year-old La Marzocco Linea PB, group two pulling 7 bar at the gauge against 9 on group one, and a steam wand that drips when closed. On site in the hour before opening. The group gasket was flattened to the thickness of a coin and the shower screen was blocked with oil rather than scale, which is the San Francisco version of this fault; the steam valve needed a seat and a spring. New gasket and screen on both groups, steam valve rebuilt, pump pressure set to 9 bar and the boiler pressure checked against the PID, shots pulled on both groups. On site 2 hours; the written estimate came in under the two-group service tier, with the diagnostic already paid coming off it; the bar opened on time.
Half the filtration sold in San Francisco is for a problem the city does not have. Hetch Hetchy water is soft enough that a softener does harm, not good, and the money is better spent on a gasket schedule: every two years on a busy bar, whether the shots have gone off or not. The gasket is a $35 part. Waiting for it to fail costs the morning.
